What it costs to hire a pitch in Saint Petersburg

The range is tenfold, and it depends less on the quality of the venue than on the time of day. Weekday evenings and Saturday daytime are the peak slots, and the same pitch costs one and a half to two times more then than it does in the morning.

What is usually NOT included and surfaces at the till: the referee (300–500 ₽ a match), balls, bibs and sometimes the changing rooms and showers. Ask about all of it up front or the tournament budget drifts by fifteen per cent.

Deposits are almost always non-refundable, and weekend slots go two to three weeks ahead. If you are putting a tournament together, book the pitch first and invite the teams second, not the other way round.

Indoor arena or outdoor pitch

In the Petersburg climate this is not a matter of taste. From October to April there is barely an outdoor option: you either play under a roof or on one of the handful of heated pitches in the city.

  • Indoor arena: playable all year, more expensive, needs booking ahead. Half of the city's pitches sit under heated inflatable domes.
  • Outdoor pitch: cheaper and in the open air, but practically unusable from November to March, and in autumn the game depends on the forecast.
  • Heated pitch: the compromise, but there are few of them and they cost as much as indoor.
  • Public court: free and needs no booking, but the surface and the markings are a lottery.

Which format fits which pitch

The format decides the pitch size and the other way round: choose eight a side and you immediately rule out most of the rental venues in the city.

Pitch sizeFormatHow many in the city

How to pick a venue for a tournament

  1. Count hours, not matches. An eight-team tournament is eight or nine hours straight, and far fewer venues will release a block that long than you would expect.
  2. Ask whether the block can be split across two pitches. Two pitches halve the day, which matters more than the quality of the turf.
  3. Check the changing rooms. Eight teams is 60 to 80 people, and two changing rooms turns every changeover into a queue.
  4. Ask about parking and the entrance. Venues in industrial areas are cheaper, but some teams will be late because they cannot find the door.
  5. Leave a 30-minute buffer at the end. Finals always overrun and the next tenant is already waiting.

Where to play for free

Public courts exist in almost every block in Saint Petersburg, but decent ones, with markings, intact goals and an even surface, are far rarer. Two reliable ones are on the Petrogradsky side and both are in the list above.

The rules at free courts are simple and unwritten: first to arrive takes the pitch, the losing side gives way to the next group, and on a fine evening there is no free space at all. For a group that plays regularly this works only in summer, and only if you accept occasionally going home without a game.

Know a venue that is not here

This directory was compiled by hand and is knowingly incomplete: the city has hundreds of halls attached to schools and clubs that never list themselves in rental catalogues. If you play somewhere good that is missing, tell us and we will add it.
